What a double coat actually is

Shepherds, huskies, goldens, Bernese and their mixes wear two coats: a soft, dense undercoat for insulation and a tougher topcoat of guard hairs for protection. The undercoat sheds constantly in Florida, where the season never tells it to stop, and when it does not get out, it packs against the skin, blocks airflow and starts trouble.

Never shave a double coat

It feels intuitive in a Florida summer and it is wrong. The coat is your dog's insulation and sunscreen: shaving removes cooling airflow structure, exposes skin to sunburn, and the coat often grows back patchy and wrong (the undercoat returns first and thicker). What professional deshedding does

The sequence matters: a deep-cleansing bath loosens dead undercoat, conditioner releases it, and a high-velocity dryer blows staggering amounts of it out while a groomer works the coat with undercoat tools, line by line, down to the skin. What comes out in one bath and deshed visit is what would have spent the next six weeks on your floors.

The schedule that controls the hair

For double and triple coated breeds we strongly recommend a 4 week bath-and-deshed cycle. That rhythm keeps the undercoat moving, the skin ventilated and the shedding at home genuinely manageable. Between visits, a weekly session with an undercoat rake helps, always on a dry, clean coat, never on a dirty one where friction damages guard hairs.

Watch the hot-spot zones

Packed undercoat holds moisture like a sponge: behind the ears, the britches, under the collar and the base of the tail are where hot spots love to start on double-coated dogs, especially swimmers.
